Sew the pieces in 3 rows and then sew the rows together. Press the finished block. 6. Repeats Steps 1–5 to complete a total of 7 Sawtooth Star blocks. 5 29 30 Sweet & Simple Handmade Let’s make the quilt 1. Arrange the 121/2˝ × 121/2˝ squares of cream cotton and the star blocks as shown (Figure 6) and sew into rows. Press the seams open. Sew the block rows together. Press the finished quilt top. 2. Make the quilt backing by either cutting a single piece of fabric or sewing together pieces of leftover fabric to measure at least 2˝ larger than the quilt top on all sides (approximately 41˝ × 65˝).

Smooth the 3 layers and then pin through all the layers with safety pins. I try to pin all around the quilt edge and then place a pin in each square. Be careful not to pin over any of the block seams. 5. Take the pinned quilt to your sewing machine and, using matching thread, carefully sew in-the-ditch of each block and each star. 6. Remove all the safety pins except those around the edge. Keep the batting untrimmed for now. Apply bias tape or binding all around the edge (if you need help with this, there are many great tutorials on YouTube or quilting websites).

The handle lining side should face the bag lining. Align the unfinished handle edges so they are evenly spaced from the side seams of the bag. Pin in place. Repeat with the other handle on the other side of the bag. Check that the handles are exactly opposite each other (Figure 5). 5 New Mama “Everything” Tote 10. Sew around the top seam of the bag layers, making sure you are including both the lining and the exterior, as well as the handles when you come to them. Leave an opening between the back handle edges.
